CR and Trade License Requirements in Qatar

What the commercial registration and trade license are, and what you need to obtain them.

CR vs trade license

The commercial registration (CR) records the company, its owners, activities and capital with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The trade license (commercial license) authorises the company to operate from specific, approved premises. Most businesses need both, and both must be renewed.

Typical CR requirements

  • Approved trade name reservation.
  • Notarised articles of association (for companies).
  • Shareholder and manager identification documents.
  • For corporate shareholders: attested constitutional documents and board resolution.
  • Any activity-specific approvals.

Typical trade license requirements

  • A valid CR.
  • A registered lease for suitable commercial premises.
  • Premises inspection and approval.
  • Civil defence or sector approvals where the activity requires them.

Common reasons for delay

  • Activity on the CR does not match the premises type.
  • Lease not registered or premises not approved for commercial use.
  • Foreign documents not properly attested and translated.
  • Missing approvals from the sector regulator.

Renewals

CRs and trade licenses have expiry dates. Late renewal can bring fines and block other transactions, so companies often hand renewals to a PRO service that tracks deadlines.
