How to Recover Debt in Qatar

A practical path from the first reminder to court enforcement, and how to choose the right step.

Start with the paper trail

Recovery is only as strong as your documents. Gather the contract or purchase order, invoices, delivery notes, statements, emails or WhatsApp messages acknowledging the debt, and any cheques.

Amicable recovery

Most debts are recovered without court. A structured sequence of reminders, calls and a clear settlement offer, often with an instalment plan, resolves many cases while protecting the relationship.

Formal demand

If the debtor does not engage, a formal written demand or legal notice sets out the amount, the basis of the claim and a deadline. It creates a clear record and often prompts payment.

Court claim

Where negotiation fails, a claim can be filed before the competent Qatari court with the supporting documents. Commercial disputes may be heard by the civil and commercial courts or by the Investment and Trade Court, depending on the nature of the dispute.

Enforcement

A judgment, or another enforceable instrument, is executed through the enforcement judge, who can order measures such as attachment of funds or assets.

Act early

  • Older debts are harder to collect.
  • Limitation periods apply.
  • Debtors can leave the country or move assets.
