Statute of Limitations for Debt in Qatar

How long you have to claim a debt in Qatar, and why waiting is risky.

The general periods

As a general rule, civil claims in Qatar are subject to a 15-year limitation period, while claims arising from commercial obligations are generally subject to 10 years.

Shorter periods exist

Certain claims, including some relating to cheques, periodic payments and specific professional or commercial dealings, have shorter limitation periods. The applicable period depends on the nature of the claim and the governing law, so check early.

Why not to wait

  • Evidence and witnesses become harder to find.
  • Debtors may relocate or dispose of assets.
  • Interest and costs arguments get more complicated.

What can interrupt the period

Actions such as a judicial claim or the debtor’s acknowledgement of the debt can affect how limitation is calculated. Keep written acknowledgements and act on them.
